Saflutan is a prescription medicine used for the treatment of pressure in the eyes (ocular hypertension) and glaucoma.

Saflutan is to be used only in the affected eye in the dose and duration as advised by the doctor. Wash your hands before using this medicine. It is advised to check the label for directions before use. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping the medicine too early may lead to the infection returning or worsening. It is advisable to remove contact lenses before using the medicine.

The most common side effects of this medicine include burning sensation, stinging sensation, itching, eyelash changes and eye pain. If these side effects persist for a longer duration, inform your doctor. In case by accident, this medicine goes into your ears, nose or mouth, immediately rinse it with water. It is advised not to drive or operate heavy machinery after use of this medicine as it may cause blurring of vision and may affect your ability to drive.

Saflutan is a prostaglandin analogue. It works by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor, thereby lowering the increased eye pressure.

How to Use Saflutan Eye Drop

This medicine is for external use only. Take it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Hold the dropper close to the eye without touching it. Gently squeeze the dropper and place the medicine inside the lower eyelid. Wipe off extra liquid.

Pregnancy  CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR
Saflutan may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Although there are limited studies in humans, animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and any potential risks before prescribing it to you. Please consult your doctor.
Breast feeding  CAUTION
Saflutan should be used with caution during breastfeeding. Breastfeeding should be held until the treatment of the mother is completed and the drug is eliminated from her body.
Driving  CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR
It is not known whether Saflutan alters the ability to drive. Do not drive if you experience any symptoms that affect your ability to concentrate and react.

Quick Tips

  • For best results, put one drop once a day in the evening/night in the affected eye(s).
  • Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute, immediately after instilling the drop.
  • Make sure to use within 4 weeks of opening the bottle.
  • Saflutan helps lower high pressure in the eye and reduces the risk of vision loss.
  • Saflutan may cause brown pigmentation of the iris. This discoloration may be permanent.
  • Wait for at least 5-10 minutes before delivering the next medication in the same eye to avoid dilution.
  • Your eyelashes may become more dense and eyelid skin may darken. These changes should disappear after discontinuing Saflutan.
